About Amsterdam

Amsterdam itself has a population of around 800,000 and is home to thousands of expats and international workers. With over a 160 different nationalities and it is the most divers city in the world.

Amsterdam prides itself on its open attitude to new arrivals. It was one of the first cities in the Netherland to set up specialist services to help expats and internationals settle in. This has led to a booming industry in expat services such as lawyers, housing agencies and companies specializing in jobs for expats.

The city derives its name from the dam over the river Amstel. It started out as a small fishing village but soon grew and became one of the most important ports in the world. The city’s 17th century canal rings are part of the Unesco world heritage list.

Amsterdam also has the oldest stock exchange in the world and some of the world’s best museums, including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

Amsterdam Jobs

Amsterdam is not the political capital of the Netherlands but is home to the country’s  financial center and some of its biggest firms, such as Philips and the ING and ABN Amro banking groups, which employ many expats. The Zuidas business district on the southern edge of the city is becoming a vibrant new office area for international companies. Amsterdam’s canal area is also a popular location for advertising agencies and creative companies.

Where to live in Amsterdam

The city centre is a popular place for Amsterdam expats to live, but can be very expensive. The eastern dockland area has also been extensively redeveloped and offers a large range of modern housing with views over the IJ river. The newer parts of the city, the east and west side of the city centre offer more affordable housing. Noord (North) is also becoming a popular area for internationals and some media companies have set up business there.

Expat Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Expat Centre is operated by the city council to help expats to settle in the city. There are many agencies to help new arrivals find housing in Amsterdam. Amsterdam also has several international schools and childcare groups which are happy to accept non-Dutch speaking children.
